Tradition. Passion. Devotion.

The wait was dragging on; the crowd was beginning to lose patience. Suddenly, this air of nervous anxiety was pierced unannounced by a rising rhythmic drum beat. Before you know it, there’s electricity in the air and the crowd was charged up by an energetic, engaging, and enthralling display.

There is an incomparable joy derived from watching an art form that has been passed through the ages; thoroughly mastered and refashioned time and again to suit an ever-changing audience. Such performances take you through the ages; using immersive storytelling, electrifying movements, and engaging performances to capture your attention and deliver a powerful narrative that stays with the audience long after it’s over.

Dollu Kunitha is one such traditional art form; a tempestuous, passionate ode to Lord Shiva. It narrates through dance and rhythmic beat, a fateful confrontation between Lord Shiva and the demon Dollu-asura, which ends with the predictable destruction of the demon. In the aftermath, Lord Shiva presents his devotees with a drum (dollu) fashioned out of the demon’s skin laying the foundation for this folk dance.

A Traditional Treat

An art form with it origins in Hindu scriptures, this is no ordinary dance. It is a show of devotion and the artistes take great pride in their performance. As you watch their fluid, fervent movements, it’s hard not to find yourself pulled in by their passion and intensity. A performance of this nature would drive greater interest in local folk art and culture and subsequently support local artistes in furthering their craft.

A Harmonious Visual Blend

Dollu Kunitha provides viewers with a sumptuous range of visuals; the dancers are often a quick blur as they interact on stage. Sticking to well-choreographed movements, the dancers excite and entertain with every move. The sharp, piercing makeup and the women’s bright sarees add a touch of rustic glamour to the whole presentation and practically light up the stage.

An Infectious Energy

With thumping drum beats, mesmerising footwork, and athletic movements, Dollu Kunitha immediately engages viewers with its passion and extravagance in expression. Viewers will find themselves swaying to the beat, losing themselves in the music as they watch this energetic performance.

As an art performance, Dollu Kunitha is fantastic because of its rhythmic beats and movement; as a traditional folk art, it is an evolving dance form deservedly demanding greater attention in today’s cultural scene.
